Two great pianist who elevated their Music Gift
Horowitz, a renowned transcriber, never took on Tatum. His technique, use of tone color and the excitement of his playing are legendary. Though sometimes criticized for being overly mannered and showy, he has a huge and passionate following and is widely considered one of the greatest pianists of the twentieth century.
Legend has it that classical pianist Vladimir Horowitz was so awed by Tatum's wizardry that it brought him to tears; he also is to have said that it was fortunate for classical pianists that Tatum did not choose to pursue a classical career. Also there is the story of how Horowitz spent months transcribing Tea For Two and then played it to Tatum. Tatum, was impressed and then played his own version of the standard to Horowitz. Horowitz was so astounded by what he heard and he immediately asked Tatum for the music. Tatum simply replied "oh, I was just improvising". Horowitz later said in an interview that he never played Tea for Two in public ever again.
