LOS ANGELES (Dec. 28) - New York rapper Nas  scored his first No. 1 on the U.S. pop charts in seven years Wednesday, with one of the biggest first-week tallies in his career, Billboard reported.

"Hip Hop Is Dead," his eighth studio set and first for former nemesis Jay Z 's Def Jam label, sold 355,000 copies in the week ended December 24, according to Nielsen SoundScan.

His previous effort, the Columbia release, "Street's Disciple," opened and peaked at No. 5 with 231,769 copies in 2004. It went on to sell about 700,000 copies.

Nas  topped the Billboard 200 other times, with 1999's "I Am... The Autobiography" (first-week sales 470,941 copies); and with 1996's "It Was Written" (268,755 copies).

Nas ' seven studio albums have sold a combined 11.4 million units in the United States, according to Nielsen SoundScan, but many came and went with little fanfare, such as 2002's "God's Son," which opened at No. 18 with 156,000 copies.

Nas  (real name: Nasir Jones) and Jay Z  used to be sworn enemies, but they settled their differences in 2005. Jay Z , the president and CEO of Def Jam Recordings, signed Nas  to a four-album deal, with Columbia on board as a partner for the first two. Jay-Z  emerged from retirement last month with his album "Kingdom Come," which opened with 680,000 units, prompting some in the hip-hop community to suggest that he was putting his own career ahead of Nas '.
The soundtrack to the Disney Channel series "Hannah Montana" climbed one place to No. 2 in its ninth week with 349,000 copies. The multi-artist compilation "NOW 23" also moves up one, to No. 3, with 313,000.

Carrie Underwood 's "Some Hearts" rose two places to No. 4 in its 58th week, moving 292,000 copies. The Beatles ' "Love" rose three to No. 5 with 282,000.

Bow Wow 's "The Price of Fame" entered at No. 6 with 262,000. It marked the rapper's third-best charting week, as 2003's "Unleashed" and 2005's "Wanted" both debuted at No. 3.

Josh Groban 's "Awake" fell two to No. 7 with 255,000 while rock band Daughtry's self-titled debut slipped one to No. 8 with 250,000.

Justin Timberlake 's "FutureSex/LoveSounds" rocketed 13 places to No. 9 with 230,000. R&B singer Akon 's "Konvicted" jumped six places to No. 10 with 227,000.
