Meaning of 40
 Why 40 days Presence Driven Life (Luke 4:1-13)   For example: the Israelites wandered for 40 years (Deuteronomy 8:2-5); Moses was on the mount for 40 days (Exodus 24:18); 40 days were involved in the story of Jonah and Nineveh (Jonah 3:4); Jesus was tempted for 40 days (Matthew 4:2); there were 40 days between Jesus’ resurrection and ascension (Acts 1:3). Forty: Trials; testing. (Matt. 4: 2; Num. 13: 25; 14: 33-34; Ex. 34:27-28; Matt. 26: 15; Acts 1: 6; 7: 30). It seems quite obvious that the Bible uses numbers in patterns.  Who can deny that 40 is significant.  Jesus was in the desert for 40 days and the Israelites wandered in the desert for 40 years. 40 THE NUMBER OF PROBATION OR TRIAL. The Israelites wandered for 40 years (Deut. 8:2-5). Moses was on the mount for 40 days (Exodus 24:18); 40 days of Jonah and Nineveh (Jonah 3:4). Jesus was tempted for 40 days (Matt. 4:2). 40 years reign of Saul, David and Solomon, 40 days and nights flood, 40 days fasting by Jesus in the wilderness.
  Luke 4  1THEN JESUS, full of and controlled by the Holy Spirit, returned from the Jordan and was led in [by] the [Holy] Spirit 2For (during) forty days in the wilderness (desert), where He was tempted tried, tested exceedingly) by the devil. And He ate nothing during those days, and when they were completed, He was hungry.
