Namibia: Workshop on Counterfeits

LOCAL musicians, authors, publishers and Police and customs officers are scheduled to meet in Walvis Bay next week to discuss the way forward in Namibia's fight against piracy and counterfeit goods.
Unesco and the Ministry of Information and Communication Technology are behind the training workshop to be held on Monday and Tuesday.
Issues to be discussed include Namibian legislation that deals with the protection of intellectual property rights, the international legal framework for the protection of intellectual property rights, the protection of reprography rights, the negative impact of piracy and counterfeiting on developing countries, intellectual property rights enforcement activities and challenges in Namibia, and piracy in the book industry.
Contributors to the discussions are expected to come from as far as Germany, Malawi, South Africa and Zimbabwe.
Also to be represented at the conference are the two local organisations fighting piracy, namely the Namibian Society of Composers and Authors of Music (NASCAM) and the Namibia Reproduction Rights Organisation (NAMRRO).
