An Indianapolis church congregation (Eastern Star Church ) is reaching out to the city's Hispanic residents. Eastern Star Church launched its new Spanish-speaking ministry Sunday.
A new era is dawning for Pastor Marvin Calderon, and a new congregation at Eastern Star Church.
"It is a special day, and I guess not only for Eastern Star, but for our community in general, it is a very special day," Pastor Calderon said.
Eastern Star expected its Sunday Spanish worship service to reach over 200 Hispanic families on the Indianapolis west side.
"We've been here in Indianapolis 8 years, and we've seen the growth in our community," Calderon said.
That community's growth was emphasized by the crowd which marched in the immigration reform rally last week.
"I am a small business owner, and I know I have a lot of Latino employees. So it is a blessing to me to refer them to this service and come to Eastern Star and hear about the goodness of God," church member James Poore said.
Eastern Star created this ministry to be multi-cultural, not just for Hispanic families, but for everyone.
"Jesus never excluded anybody, so we as Christians ought to reach out and do just as Jesus did, reach out and try to include everybody. So everybody is getting the word of God. That is extremely important to the Eastern Star Church, to pastor Jeffery Johnson, and also to our family," church member Anthony Murdock said.
"God has just opened doors for us to reach the Spanish-speaking community, and we just think something special is going to happen for the city of Indianapolis and for the Eastern Star Church," Pastor Jeffery Johnson said.
Iglesia Eastern Star intends to reach out with more than just music from the choir, or a message from the pulpit. It plans to offer outreach services, including English language classes, job training and placement, along with food and clothing for families in need.
Both Spanish and English-speaking churchgoers arrived for the Sunday's service.
