Superbowl No malfunctions with Prince show

MIAMI — Prince can be dirty.

But with the NFL pushing its Super Bowl halftime shows in a family-friendly direction, Prince can be clean. He gave the NFL his word and a signed contract. He kept his end of the bargain.

ON DEADLINE: Did Prince slip one past everyone?

Performing on an illuminated stage shaped in his trademark symbol and joined by a full band including the sexy "Twins," Prince asked the crowd, "Are you all ready to get nuts tonight," and launched into Let's Go Crazy from his Purple Rain album. Super Bowl revelers lucky enough to score field access rushed the stage.

Florida A&M's renowned marching band joined Prince for a Baby I'm a Star/Proud Mary medley.

The diminutive and esoteric pop star, who is playing Friday and Saturday shows through Feb. 24 at the Rio Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, wore a teal suit with an orange shirt, a possible nod to the Miami Dolphins' team colors.

He followed the medley with a cover of the Foo Fighters' Best of You and ended his performance with the classic Purple Rain.

Since the infamous Janet Jackson/Justin Timberlake "wardrobe malfunction" in 2004, the NFL has aimed for less controversial performers.

Paul McCartney performed in 2005 and the Rolling Stones hit the stage last year. Many viewed Prince, 48, as the most risky choice since the Timberlake-Jackson fiasco. However, even last year's Stones Super Bowl performance included lyrics from two songs that were censored.

Prince told NFL executives that he wouldn't answer questions at Thursday's halftime show news conference but said he would perform. He brought a full band, complete with backup singers, drums, keyboards and horns.

Prince asked if there were any questions. As soon as a reporter started to ask a question, Prince hit his guitar and launched into a three-song set, including a cover of Johnny B. Goode.
